Best Way to Play TAK on Windows 8

Maybe this was brought up before, maybe not, but I can't play Kingdoms with ease on Windows 8. Like for starters, I could hit Pause to just pause the game, or I can click either F1 of Esc and have various options available: Save, Load, Exit, OPTION, etc.
The Problem is that what I described doesn't work!

It's a small thing, but it's getting annoying.

Also, I can't get full screen unless I want certain details to be REALLY little, How to I fix that?

Have you tried compatibility mode on Kingdoms.exe?

How do I do that?

Right click the .exe file/ properties/ run this program with 95/98 or xp compatibility mode. Or try changing the video/display render from hardware to software.

One Problem Solved, but the game keeps freezing up on me.
I'll just have to keep fiddling with it.

Well I ran it on that capability mode and it started to work more familiarly, except now it freezes
up, makes that sound like eh-eh-eh-eh-eh-eh-eh-eh..., and my saved games can be corrupted.
