When just going by the stats, some units here have an obvious reach advantage

Examples of short range attacks:

Swordsman: 30
Berserker: 40
Jungle Orc: 45

Some examples longer range attacks:

Crusader: 80
Executioner: 85
Dark Hand: 150!

In game however I honestly don't see how these factor in any meaningful way. They'll always just charge in as close as possible before attacking from what I've seen. Anyway, my here's my question; Are there any special instances where these ranges are actually used?

yes melee units can have an aoe but i think the range refers to the weapon animation and model. i think the unit will stop walking at there weapon range anyway.

without crusades balance
some melee (blade demon, not sure who :? ) had 250 or 150 range, and still they were melee, not range at all

as wqaopl said, melee units are limited by not by range in units stats but by weapon animation and other stats, who i don't understand at all
