Apparantly you can set formations by pressing alt (number) but it doesn't seem to do anything, anyone know how it works?

try hitting the number to select the formations previously assigned.
or try using ctrl + number.

Formations are set by Alt+Number. Groups are set by Ctrl+Number.
Formations force all units to move at the speed of the slowest moving unit in the group. Groups do not.

oh is that all it does?? so you can't set a line of troops and march them down in that line? It would just be so useful to select say 5 drigs separated and move them down in that formation without them going to a centre point blowing each other up. Or keeping cannoneers in a v formation etc Does this kind of thing work in TA machine?

There is no formation..... They walk in groups. Not like your thinking. Like normal groups.

I find this option useless. Your troops will eventually lineup one behind the other with out it though one of your units will undoubtally turn back bogging the rest down. If you use the control key you can steer your troops around obstacles. Try moving your troops in small groups with slightly different courses.

the formation will only do two things one, set all unit walking speed to the slowest unit two, prevent any of the units from moving too far from the group
